For instance, when performing a meniscus repair, the doctor performs a surgical procedure to repair a damaged meniscus, which is a shock-absorbing piece of cartilage between the ends of the knee bones that allows for cushioning. A meniscectomy occurs when a portion of meniscus cartilage is removed from the knee joint. With a plica excision, irritated tissue is removed from the knee.
