The Danger of T-Bone Car Accidents

Additionally, the study indicated that side impact collisions may be classified as minor, moderate, or severe, based on the level of intrusion into the car:

• Minor: The door intrudes into the car by four inches or less
• Moderate: The door intrudes into the car by four to six inches
• Severe: The door intrudes into the car by six or more inches

Although some vehicles are equipped with rear airbags, the sides of the hit car typically have little material to absorb the force of the impact. Not only are occupants endangered by the crushing pressure of the door, but also the side of the car simply cannot absorb all of the energy from the collision.
