Types of Car Accidents

Legal Representation for Injuries Sustained in Different Types of Car Accidents throughout Georgia

There is no such thing as a run-of-the-mill car accident. Even though minor accidents are referred to as fender-benders, all car accidents are serious issues, especially when it comes to insurance issues and injuries. There were roughly 10.8 million motor vehicle accidents in the United States in 2009, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. In the state of Georgia, there were 1,284 fatalities caused by traffic accidents in 2009 with a fatality rate of 1.2 per 100 million vehicle miles.

Single Vehicle Accidents

This type of accident involves only one vehicle and it can be caused by a myriad of issues ranging from falling asleep behind the wheel to losing control of the vehicle. Single vehicle accidents can also be caused by a medical condition, a malfunction in the vehicle, distracted driving, weather conditions, swerving to avoid an animal or pedestrian, road rage, or aggressive driving.

Single vehicle accidents can involve striking a building, a pedestrian, an animal, a guardrail, a ditch, a tree, a fire hydrant, a retaining wall, or a telephone pole.

Multi-Car Accidents

These accidents involve two or more vehicles and typically occur on major roadways such as interstates or freeways. Accidents involving two or more cars can be very difficult for emergency responders to handle. Vehicles can become tangled together in a heap of metal, making it difficult for emergency personnel to rescue trapped victims.

Multi-car accidents can also cause vehicles to catch fire, which can spread to other vehicles or even buildings if not contained quickly. It can be difficult to determine liability in multi-vehicle accidents because accident reconstruction might not find all of the answers necessary.

Vehicle Rollover

A vehicle rollover accident can occur when a car is involved in an accident and it rolls either onto its roof or side. Trucks and SUVs are more susceptible to rollover accidents compared to sedans or sports cars because they have a higher center of gravity. This type of accident is can also be caused by sharp turns or a vehicle clipping the curb when making a turn.

Rear-End Collisions

One of the most common types of car accidents is that of the rear-end collision. A rear-end collision occurs when one vehicle strikes another along the rear of the car. These accidents typically occur when there is a high volume of stop-and-go traffic, when the vehicle in the lead stops suddenly, or when the trail vehicle tailgates the lead vehicle.

Passengers in the lead vehicle are the ones who typically suffer the most injuries, which include whiplash, broken bones, and even lacerations. For the majority of these accidents, drivers of the trailing vehicle are typically held liable for the damages incurred from the accident.

Head-On Accidents

One of the most dangerous types of vehicle accidents is that of the head-on collision. This occurs when two vehicles collide with the fronts of their cars. These accidents usually lead to fatalities due to the speed and the force of the collision.

Head-on accidents can be caused by a vehicle driving the wrong way on the highway, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, falling asleep at the wheel, swerving across the double yellow lines, or poor visibility due to weather conditions.

“T-Bone” Accidents

“T-Bone” accidents, also known as side-impact accidents, occur when one vehicle strikes the side of another and the result is a “T.” These types of accidents can be very deadly depending on the speed of the striking vehicle and whether or not occupants were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. “T-Bone” accidents commonly require the use of the Jaws of Life rescue tools by firefighters to remove victims.
