Stockbridge is a city in the northern part of Henry County in the state of Georgia. The city has a convenient location just 20 miles south of Atlanta and close to major highways. Stockbridge is a part of the metropolitan area in Atlanta. As of the 2010 census, the population of Stockbridge is 25,637. When naming the post office and the village, they chose to name it after Professor Stockbridge. He was a yankee school teacher and thought to be the most outstanding of the pioneer teachers. His full name was Levi Stockbridge, and he would travel along the East Coast and teach classes in many communities. The post office was granted on April 5, 1847. Great changes began for the community in 1881 when the Southern Railroad came about. Stockbridge raised their prices of land so that a depot and railroad track would not be built in their city. A depot for the railroad was created just outside the city, and in 1882 the present existence of Stockbridge began. The town was not incorporated as a town until 1895, and then finally in 1920 as a city in Georgia.
