According to police, an elderly New Hampshire man cannot explain why he crossed the centerline and plowed head-on into a processional of 200 motorcyclists, striking seven riders and killing two. The accident occurred Sunday in Westmoreland, New Hampshire.

According to New Hampshire television, the ride was an annual Ride for the Fallen, a ride in honor of Army Spc. Justin Rollins, a Newport native who was killed in Iraq by a roadside bomb in 2007. The ride raises money for local high school students. Parents of the fallen soldier were among those participating in the ride. The accident occurred just in front of the mother of Mr. Rollins, who was riding in a car with event organizers.

Tragic accidents unfortunately happen every day throughout the United States. In this case, an elderly man cannot even explain what happened. Whether it was a stroke or a momentary lapse of control within his vehicle is yet to be determined. The fact remains that two riders who were participating in a memorial charity event are dead, and another five are injured.

Attorneys will begin sorting through the facts of the case, but this tragic accident was just that — an accident. Speed was not a factor. Distraction may have have been. Whether this particular driver should have been driving at his advanced age will be determined as the case is evaluated.

What we do know is that many people are still in the hospital, loved ones no longer have their father, brother, son, and many of the riders will face large medical bills as the result of being hit by a car while on a motorcycle. Attorneys are absolutely needed to sort through the complexities and emotions of such a moving case.
