Van Sant Law is proud to support Atlanta News First’s Surprise Squad, a monthly initiative that shines a spotlight on those who go above and beyond to help others in the community.
In this month’s segment, the Surprise Squad, sponsored by Van Sant Law and United Community Bank, recognized Newton County Sheriff’s Deputies Devan Moore and DeMarcus Pope for their extraordinary act of kindness.

Earlier this year, Deputies Moore and Pope encountered a mother and her two teenage sons stranded on the roadside in Covington, Georgia, after a flat tire left them stuck near home. But what began as a routine act of assistance quickly became something more.
Instead of just changing the tire and moving on, the deputies took the time to teach Mekhi and Kajlih, the two teens, how to safely and properly change a tire themselves. The deputies talked them through the steps, provided gloves, and stayed by their side throughout the process, turning a frustrating situation into a meaningful, teachable moment.
“It was more than just about changing a tire,” Deputy Pope said in an earlier interview. “It was about preparing them for the future.”
Their actions left a lasting impression on the boys and their mother, who later said it was “really a great experience” and praised the deputies as “the best police officers I’ve met in my entire life.”
In recognition of their compassion, patience, and commitment to public service, the Surprise Squad presented Deputies Moore and Pope with gift cards and heartfelt thanks for making a real difference in the lives of those they serve.
