Heavy traffic naturally leads to more accidents, more serious accidents, and more fatal accidents, and this holiday weekend metropolitan Atlanta will be the 9th worst city for holiday traffic in the nation, according to INRIX, a group that provides traffic counts and analysis.
Normally, INRIX says Atlanta is the 18th worst city for traffic, but with special events like Dragon Con and hundreds of thousands headed into Atlanta for the big NASCAR race at Altanta Motor Speedway, traffic this weekend will be thick. Add to that the locals who want to just get out of town in every direction, and you have the recipe for some major delays on the roads. So, this is your warning, Atlanta! The roads are going to be packed this weekend, so adjust your schedules accordingly. The Georgia Department of Transportation is going to help, and three cheers to them for this. The Associated Press reports that the GDOT will halt all roadwork and open up as much of their system as possible to enable traffic flow.
If you don’t have to be on the roads, it might be a nice time to stay home, organize a dinner with your neighbors, or just enjoy the beautiful fall weather. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that our Labor Day weekend accident tolls in Atlanta are around 2000 wrecks and 15 fatalites. Those are serious numbers. So if you’re getting out this weekend, expect to move slow, and here are a few tips:
- Don’t drink and drive
- Watch for those who may have been drinking and driving
- Stay off the roads in the wee hours between midnight and 5 a.m. (when most accidents occur)
- Keep your speed low
- Expect traffic delays and plan accordingly
