As the fall makes its way toward winter, it’s a good idea to check your automobile maintenance records. It’s become common practice to change the batteries in your smoke detector when Daylight Savings Time ends, and at the Law Offices of David Van Sant, we like to remind our clients that this time of year it’s important to make sure your automobile is being well maintained.
Slick roads during the winter won’t cause near as much trouble for you this season if you make sure your tires have a good tread and are road worthy. Visit the neighborhood tire shop for a free inspection, and if the technicians say you should rotate your tires, do it! If you need to buy tires, it’s always best to buy four at once. Since that may not be financially feasible, be sure to replace the worst tires first. Many tire stores offer discounts when you buy four at a time, so be sure to check prices to get the best deal.
Good brakes are also a key to safe winter driving, so if you’ve heard some grinding or squeeling, or if your car doesn’t always stop as fast as you’d like, it may be time for new pads or shoes. If you are keeping good records on your vehicle, you should be able to identify when the last time you had brake work done. If it’s been a while, or if you have no record at all, it’s worth your safety and that of your passengers to have your brakes checked out.
Oil changes are one of those routine items that helps to keep your car running smoothe. If you drive long distances and rack up the miles on your daily commute, you’ll want to make sure you are getting an oil change about every 3,000 miles. Check the manual on your particular vehicle. Newer models may not require oil changes as frequently as older model vehicles.
Windshield wipers are a quick and inexpensive item to replace, and having a good pair of wipers can make all the difference on sloppy, wet, or rainy days. Most auto supply stores can help you not only find the right wipers for your car, but many will also help you install them right there in the parking lot. Wipers are easy to replace, so if you aren’t happy with your current wiper performance, get some new ones! Also don’t forget a gallon of wiper fluid. Fill the reservoir under yoru hood to ensure you can always get those windshields clean.
