Increase in Wrong-Way Crashes Spawning Concerns & Tips

Categories: Accident Victims

There have been three accidents involving fatalities and wrong-way drivers in the last month in the Atlanta area, a dramatic increase that has local newspaper reporters taking notice. The Atlanta Journal Constitution published an interesting article today with a variety of facts that lead both to tips for drivers and caution for everyone on the road.

There are only 350 wrong-way crashes in the United Sates that result in fatalities every year. That’s a small percentage (just 1%) of all fatalities reported nationwide. But since four people have died in the Atlanta area recently, locations throughout the area’s highway system are under scrutiny.

A Texas Transportation study led to the installation of new, safer entry ramps actually designed with signage that people under the influence are more likely to see. That’s because the majority of wrong way crashes — a full two thirds — involve people who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Autopsies on recent crash victims in Georgia have yet to be released, but authorities in all three cases say alcohol “may have been a factor.”

Studies have also shown that most of these crashes happen between 1 a.m. and 3 a.,m. That’s a good reason to make sure your kids are home and safely off the roads by midnight, and adults should take heed as well.

Wrong way drivers who are drunk tend to drive in the right hand land, which would be the fast lane for people going the right way. For that reason alone, it’s best to drive in the right hand lane at night, particularly in the wee hours. Head on collisions are particularly tragic, often with no time for reaction, and no time to brake or get out of the way. Two cars colliding head-on at 60 mph or higher leaves little room for survival. Tell your teens and loved ones to always drive in the right hand lane if they have to be on the road in the wee hours of the morning.

Holiday weekends can be particularly problematic on the highways, and Georgia will see a huge influx of traffic this weekend.
