It may not surprise you to learn that there are more dog bites over holidays in the U.S. than at any other time of year. That’s because dogs are surrounded by strangers that they don’t know during holidays, and that can often lead to unpredictable behavior. Children are more often the victims of serious dog attacks than are adults.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are 4.7 million dog bites in America every year. That’s a lot of bites. In fact, that’s nearly 13,000 dog bites a day! About 2/3rds of the bites occur on or near the victim’s property, and in most cases the victim knows the owner and often the dog too. What that says is you can never be too careful around unfamiliar dogs.
When owners are held accountable for the actions of their dogs, more owners take notice. Animal activists believe most dog bites can be prevented through behaviorial changes by both owners and visitors to strange properties. Here are some suggestions:
Don’t ever try to pet a dog that is chained up. Chained dogs are more likely to nip or bite.
Teach your children to avoid dogs that are tied up (for the same reason).
Avoid walking or jogging by a home with a known vicious dog.
Don’t turn your back on a dog you don’t know.
Don’t allow your children to be alone in a room with a dog you do not know.
Do not approach or try to pet a loose or stray dog.
Avoid direct eye contact with a stray dog. Turn your head slightly to avoid confrontation.
If you are attacked, “feed” the dog your purse, a stick or anything you can shove at them to get them away from your body.
Do not try to intervene in a dog fight. You could lose fingers that way!
If you are attacked by a dog, seek the help of a personal injury attorney.
