The goal of the team at Van Sant Law, is to protect victims of personal injury as well as keep them up-to-date regarding new cases and changes in the law. In response to a recent case which took place in Charleston, West Virginia, David Van Sant had the following observations. He commented that the attorney in the case filed three personal injury lawsuits because C8 was found in water supplies. It is believed that the local water may have been contaminated by DuPont. If this is the case, the number of incidents will undoubtedly rise as exposure to C8 can lead to a number of different diseases.

In the Wood County Circuit Court, a class action lawsuit has been filed. The lawsuit states that this potentially dangerous substance may have been contaminating water in the area since as early as the 1950s. DuPont manufactures Teflon and other products, products which used C8 in their production. A science panel has found that exposure to C8 can lead to pregnancy-induced hypertension, kidney cancer, testicular cancer, thyroid disease, and ulcerated colitis. Due to these findings, DuPont is not able to argue that C8 can cause certain diseases.

Attorney Van Sant also stated that in cases involving a class action lawsuit, it is imperative that you have legal representation on your side that you can trust. He also stated that those who have been exposed to toxic substances like C8 may not see the consequences for years. Therefore, just because you may not be showing any symptoms as of yet, it does not mean that it will not happen.

Allied Concrete Company of Richmond, Virginia, was ordered to pay $10.6 million to the widower and the parents of a woman who was killed when a cement truck hit the car the victim was riding in. The concrete company’s lawyers were denied a new trial by Charlottesville Circuit Judge Edward L. Hogshire. The company appealed based on the fact that the woman’s husband had been advised to clean up his Facebook page to eliminate photos of him holding a beer and other pictures that the husband’s attorney told him jurors might find offensive.

The man and his lawyer were sanctioned $722,000 from the $8.6 million he was awarded for tampering with the Facebook page, which was considered to be misconduct. (The parents of the woman each received one million dollars.)

According to court documents, a month before the trial started, the husband’s lawyer requested that 16 photos from the Facebook page be deleted. Among the photos were pictures of the husband with alcohol and a photo of him wearing a t-shirt that said “I (heart symbol) hot moms.”

In Georgia, a lot of people like to cut loose on the weekends, and ATV enthusiasts are growing in number. Unfortunately, so are ATV accidents, injuries and even deaths.

It’s funny how we’re very careful with our kids when it comes to driving our cars, but when it comes to things like mini bikes, jet skis, or ATVs, we hand over the keys and watch them speed away.

Making sure children and adults alike know the safety rules around these sorts of “toys” is key to preventing accidents. Boating season should be about over, but a few warm days is all it takes to get the jet skis back on the lakes. All jet ski drivers must complete a boater safety course. Personal flotation devices are required, and you can’t drink and drive. Some jet skis go as fast as 70 mph. Safe operation at all times is the key to safe riding and fun.

A young driver under the influence of alcohol careened over the curb and off a busy Las Vegas street on Thursday, running over seven people who were waiting at a bus stop. Four people on the street were killed. The driver of the car and his three passengers were all injured and taken to hospitals. Three on the street survived but are in critical condition in Las Vegas hospitals.

According to police in Las Vegas, the driver had a lengthy arrest record, including drug possession, lewd conduct, and larceny. He was charged with DUI and remains hospitalized with serious injuries from the accident.

Atlanta personal injury attorney David Van Sant says criminal records like that possessed by this driver are major factors in determining the judgments that may be awarded to victims of such an accident. When numerous people have been hurt (in this case as many as 11 dead or injured), insurance companies will fight hard to avoid payments. If the driver does not have insurance, the victims will be faced with an entire new set of problems.

An avid cyclist from the Gray area was injured in a hit and run accident on Sunday and Jones County investigators are looking for the driver who left the bike rider bloody from head to toe.

According to witnesses, the cyclist was one of several friends who were out for a 90 mile bike ride on Sunday. They were riding on a stretch of highway that did not contain bike lanes, but they were riding single file and were not in the path of traffic.

The motorist hit one of the cyclists and failed to stop. Steve Parker of Gray was injured and will be in a wheelchair for at least six weeks with a broken pelvis.

A 20-year veteran of the Jupiter, Florida, police department was killed on Sunday when the motorcycle he was driving as part of the motorcade escorting President Obama to an event in Palm Beach was strike by a woman who was entering the I-95 Interstate. Drugs and alcohol were not involved in the crash.

This is not the first time a police officer on a motorcycle has been killed while escorting the president. Last year a motorcade in Dallas experienced a similar accident, and a Dallas-area motorcycle cop was killed.

When things like this happen, officials must look beyond the sadness to determine if such an accident could be prevented. Since police in Florida do not have lots of experience with presidential motorcades, it is necessary for the departments to evaluate how they operate during these types of special events.

The weather is just about as perfect as it can get for people who like to golf. Golf courses throughout Georgia are enjoying their busy season as duffers of all ages hit the links. While a pulled shoulder or a back ache can be a common injury associated with golf, very few people think about the potential dangers of golf carts.

Sadly hundreds of people are injured or killed every year in golf carts. Many of the accidents occur off course, on city or neighborhood streets. In June a 32-year old man was seriously injured when the golf cart he was driving fell off a golf course bridge. In May, a 15 year old boy was killed in Franklin, Tennessee, on a golf cart he was driving on a neighborhood street.

While negligent driving can be a reason for accidents, defects in golf cart design are not uncommon. A lack of proper maintenance can also be a concern, particularly at busy golf clubs where dozens of carts are being driven by different drivers every day.

Household accidents happen every day, but the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Centers for Disease Control are warning parents of small children of the dangers of tiny batteries. In particular, tiny button size batteries, which have been responsible for at least 40,000 emergency room visits of children 13 and under in the last decade. At least 14 small children, ages 7 months to three years, have died from swallowing the batteries.

Battery consumption symptoms involve vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, diarrhea, respiratory distress and dysphagia or difficulty swallowing. This makes it especially hard to diagnose what the problem is, especially if the caregiver didn’t see the child consume the battery.

What makes the small items so dangerous, however, is that in just two hours time they can cause serious burns from the chemical hydroxide. They can also leak a corrosive chemical called alkaline electrolyte. Researchers identified the 3-volt lithium, coin-size batteries that are less than or equal to 20 mm as the most common culprit.
