Zachary ShewmakerZachary S. Shewmaker was born in Danville, Kentucky.  He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Centre College in 2003 and earned his Juris Doctor with honors from the University of Georgia School of Law in 2006.  As a law student, he represented UGA Law in two national mock trial competitions, coached a regional champion Mock Trial team, served as a summer judicial clerk in the Western Judicial Circuit, and practiced with the Western Judicial Circuit’s District Attorney’s office for a year and a half.  Zach focuses his practice on representing people who have been seriously injured or families who have lost a loved one due to the negligent acts or omissions of others.  Zach is an experienced trial attorney who has been recognized as one of the top young lawyers in Georgia.  He specializes in cases involving wrongful death, car wrecks, tractor-trailer wrecks, and premises liability.

Super Lawyers

Georgia Super Lawyers Magazine recognized Zach as one of its “Rising Stars” in 2013, 2014 and 2015, and a Super Lawyer in 2016. Only 2.5% of the lawyers in Georgia are selected for this honor. Super Lawyers is a rating service of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have earned a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. The annual selections are made using a rigorous multi-phased process that includes a statewide survey of lawyers, an independent research evaluation of candidates, and peer reviews by practice area.

History

Before joining Van Sant Law, Zach spent more than seven years defending motor carriers, their insurers, and tractor-trailer drivers in wrongful death and catastrophic injury cases. He worked the first four years after law school with a mid-size Atlanta firm defending personal injury claims arising out of tractor-trailer wrecks. He spent the following three years in the Atlanta office of a regional firm whose transportation practice group was ranked first in the nation by The Best Lawyers in America. As a result of working closely with trucking companies and their insurers, he gained valuable insight into how cases are evaluated and how to best achieve a favorable result for his clients.  Zach joined Van Sant Law Firm as a partner in 2013 to help individuals and their families pursue legitimate claims against negligent individuals and companies.
